Why Linux will not displace Windows

You are kidding arent you ?Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?
That sounds preposterous to me.
If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.
Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.
Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.
I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

    Hi,

I think you need to understand what Linux is, and what Windows is, before you write posts like the above. I suggest you try installing Ubuntu linux.

Linux does not depend on Windows to run, and runs directly on top of computer hardware, even platforms not supported by Windows. It has its own way of supporting devices and running services, which are different, and generally technically better than their counterparts on Windows. Hence the number of Linux servers in use around the world.

Linux does not depend on copies of Windows XP or any other OS. There are no licensing fees or any other costs associated, except for the cost of a blank CD if you make an image. I think Ubuntu will actually mail you a CD for free if you request it.

Linux has been in development for at least 10-15 years by now. So, it has actually been developed for a long time. Considering the number of people that have contributed, the total value may be measured in the billions of dollars.

Running a computer from start to finish is not actually as complicated as you make out to be. There are very simple OSs around which fit within a few thousand lines of code, which provide some basic boot and interactive services for a computer.

You probably need to spend more time researching OS/2 before you talk about that. Actually, if I remember anything at all, it was that MS and IBM were developing OS/2 together, and MS boned IBM.

P.S. Mac OS X does not have anything to do with Windows either. Just because it runs on Intel does not have any relation to Windows at all. However, you can run Windows inside Mac OS X as a guest operating system if you need to.

In the future, I’d recommend you carefully consider what you discuss when you post publicly. It is obvious you have not researched the topics you are discussing. They are full of your own opinions, which while clearly incorrect to anyone has at least some technical knowledge of computers. It would be a shame if your posts were interpreted as fact by someone without the knowledge to see otherwise.

    Kind Regards,
    Samuel

you people should try linux before you bad mouth it, its actually quite a nice operating system. its probably the best operating system for any software developers, and the fact that they have the repository for all your program updates and to get new programs is just awesome.

Sean pretty much summed it up for me.

You need BIOS and boot systems. But not Windows itself. Part of installing Linux, just like any other OS, if you’re not doing a dual-boot system, is to format the hdd - that means removing EVERYTHING - that includes Windows

I personally came to laugh, I’m pretty sure the spike in hits you’re getting is other people coming to laugh too.

Though just for the record, you can run Linux on your PC without Windows, the simplest way to do this is with Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com) or Damn Small Linux (http://damnsmalllinux.org) you can run DSL from a USB stick, you don’t even need a hard drive.

Oh, and as of the “Leopard” release of OSX, Apple’s OS is a POSIX certified UNIX variant, largely derived from FreeBSD. Yes it runs on Intel hardware, but it also runs in IBM Power PC hardware. Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows are two completely separate things.

Building a complete Operating system is not that difficult, if you want to do the same you should read the book by Andrew Tannenbaum:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_S._Tanenbaum

The inventor of Minix, and the same man who argue with Linus Torvalds about the best way to design an OS during the early days of Linux.

Thank you, reading that was very amusing. :)

The name “Linux” comes from the Linux kernel, started in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The system’s utilities and libraries come from the GNU operating system, started in 1983 by Richard Stallman. The GNU contribution is the reason for the alternative name GNU/Linux.

Microsoft Windows is the name of several families of software operating systems by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs).

  46. Charles Xavier Says:

Wow, the Linux communists are very hypocritical. If the Linux communists actually read the article, they would know that the Linux needs background Windows services. Windows created the critical components which allow the Linux to talk to the hardware, and you can see this when the computer loads the hardware. Without Windows, your the Linux could not run.

Seriously, I must know: is this satire or for real?

@Charles Xavier: you can’t trust everything you read on the internet. Old unix OSes worked in the 70s long before Windows or MS-DOS even started. And if Windows did create all of those drivers, how were they installed on my PC without a Windows CD or any Windows data ever coming near it?

  49. Charles Xavier Says:

To ryan: You still don’t understand. Clearly the unix OS worked, but it is only software and required Windows to be able to talk to the hardware. It is understandable that you did not know, as it is not easily visible. The Windows hardware came far before Windows Graphical OS.

I know a lot now, maybe I should make my own blog which contains information about Linux problems and the trouble I had with creating spreadsheets in Linux.

  52. ryan Says:

Windows is software, not hardware. Hardware is the electrical components in the computer like the motherboard, CPU, memory, storage, expansion cards. Software (like Windows, BSD, Linux, and OS/2 and any applications) are the programs that are executed.

    A computer boots like so:
    1) Power on, BIOS is executed
    2) BIOS searches for boot devices, finds one
    3) BIOS loads the boot sector into memory, executes the program within (bootloader)
    4) The bootloader usually loads a second stage of itself, because the boot sector is far too small to hold a modern bootloader. It then finds a kernel, which it loads into memory and executes.
    5) The kernel loads drivers for the hardware that is in the computer, mounts any necessary filesystems in the storage, and starts any necessary services or applications.

The BIOS is not part of Windows, it is made by the motherboard manufacturer and is payed for as part of the motherboard.

After that, the boot loader is executed, which is not a part of Windows either. Windows has a boot loader, called NTLDR. GNU/Linux uses GNU GRUB, a piece of free software made by the GNU project.

After that, the kernel is loaded. This is not part of Windows either. Windows has a kernel, called NT6 or something. Linux is the kernel of the GNU/Linux Operating system.

Then the kernel loads drivers. These are not Windows either. Windows has lots of drivers, as does Linux and any other operating system.

Then the kernel starts the services and applications that are necessary. These are also not Windows. Windows has services and applications. In linux, a program called init (not part of Windows in any way) starts all sorts of services, then BASH is started as a user interface. Often a GUI is started as well as BASH. None of these are in any way a part of Windows.

So, therefore, no part of Windows is started or used in booting Linux or any other operating system besides Windows.

  53. Charles Xavier Says:

Look, I will explain it simple for you. The Linux is software. The Linux needs something else to talk with the hardware. Windows can run a computer from start to finish, so Windows can talk with the hardware. Therefore the Linux requires Windows to talk with the hardware. Of course, it is more complicated than this, as you showed, but this is the main idea behind how the Linux runs.

  54. ryan Says:

Charles, I have realized you are being entirely facetious. To anyone taking him serious, no one could think that linux replaces important files with communist propagands (as he stated in another comment).

Regardless, anyone who believes what Charles is saying is idiotic. Windows is just software as well. It communicates with the hardware itself. As does Linux. An OS is composed of a kernel, libraries and applications.

The kernel communicates directly with the hardware and controls it. Windows has a kernel. Linux is the kernel of the GNU/Linux operating system.

Windows has libraries, they are the .dll files in the \\Windows\system and \\Windows\system32 directories. GNU/Linux has them as well. They are the .so and .a files in /usr/lib /lib and any other lib directories.

Windows has applications, such as MS explorer, IE, notepad, etc. GNU/Linux has applications, such as bash, nano, X11, and grep.

Get it? Windows is software, Linux is software. Motherboards, processors, network cards, and memory are hardware. Linux communicates directly with the hardware. Windows does as well. They do not depend on each other, they are entirely separate.

Furthermore, I hate people calling Linux Marxist or Communist. I am a capitalist libertarian and I use Linux. It has no political ideology. Just because it is free doesn’t make it Communist or Marxist. People chose to create it for free, no one was forced to. Linux is not communist, marxist, or at all political.
