It wont happen
I dont see how this will happen at all.Vista is far more powerful than windows XP, and runs twice as fast. It is also much harder to pirate, and this point more than anything else has the Linux crowd in a panic.
It wont be long until Windows XP is no longer supported, and when that happens, what is Linux going to do ?
Linux will have to find a way to work under Vista from here on, since it wont be able to rely on XP being readily available anymore.
Linux may seem like a good alternative to Office, but all that is happening in linux is that the windows interface is cleverly hidden away. It still needs the drivers and software services in order to run, and in most cases - that happens WITHOUT a valid windows licence.
This is just plain piracy.
Vista will finally put an end to this blatant abuse of intellectual property, and linux should decline, taking the pirates with it.
Anyone that supports the continuation of Windows XP in place of Vista surely has a hidden agenda .. and you will surely be caught out.

you clueless fu@#wit. Vista is full of secuirty holes, needs about 4 gig of ram to work - SP1 should address some of these problems but many bussiness and home users stil havnt upgraded to vista due to the crap hardware and software support!!
Linux on the other hand will run on a low end machine faster than vista would on the latest machine, granded the hardware support isnt as good but there is a whole community on the internet willing to help. Even dell are selling machines with linux on. How many websites do you think sit on linux servers? All it would need would be google to release a linux distro and that would start to take users away from the other priced, full of secuirty holes, bloatware which is know as vista.

Bull crap.
Vista is by far the easiest to take control of. All I need is your IP address and I can log on and your PC is no longer yours and the computer belongs to me. There’s a reason I left Windows after 98, every version after it was worse and worse. Each version used more and more memory, crashed more and more often, and is susceptible to more and more viruses.
Here’s what my problem is: Windows ME, XP, and Vista. They all run programs that you pick up, including viruses, without you having to do anything. You have to download and run 2 firewalls, download and run 2 AV programs (which hasn’t worked since 98), just to slow down a virus.
Also, after 98, DOS became pretty non-existant, so if the system of windows fails, the entire computer fails. And how much does it cost to fix it? 35 dollars, and hope you get a new key so you can reinstall windows. Oh sad is the world, when there’s 30% of the winows vista users that has to continually do that because they keep getting attacked by viruses and crashes. Linux runs on a 10th of what is required to run windows. I don’t use windows at all. My system has a dialup connection that has the bandwidth of a DSL line for windows. Yes, I’m getting the same download speed as you DSL users out there.

are you high? why are you lying? i am a PC technician, thats all i do every day all day, i also in my spare time build gaming machines, very powerful gaming machines.
VISTA IS IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM FASTER THAN XP, its not even as fast as XP , thats because the hard drive read/write speeds in vista are close to half that of XP, this isnt “theory” this is just fact.
I know this because i have tested, why did ms stop making vista only games? BECAUSE THE VISTA ONLY GAME RAN BETTER ON XP, despite them being “vista only” again i know this not becaue i heard or read it, but because i tested it, myself, i didnt just make it up, thats just the gaming aspect,
vista has (and can be confirmed faily easily), im most case’s worst security (because once a virus gets in there, its staying in there, Vista is DRM’d to death, ms can watch, stop, hinder you at any time, without you ever knowing it, its heavily boated, XP can do with 512 mb ram what vista needs 2gb to do, and XP still does it better.
I dont usualy respond to these sort of things but reading this “make believe” i have no choice, how much did MS pay you for this rubbish you spreading?

“Anyone that supports the continuation of Windows XP in place of Vista surely has a hidden agenda .. and you will surely be caught out.”
that could be one of the dumbest things i have ever read on the internet.
you do know what vista and XP are?

man this guy can’t be for real. I mean how can it be possible to cramp so much stupidity into one single brain. after reading through all of the coments i came to 2 different conclusions. either this is elaborate trolling or this person is a stupid ignorant who claims to know about software and computers and at the end doesn’t know shit. I mean the guy talks about certain things that need a certain level of computer hardware and OS understanding but then shits on it by mentioning shit like “linux can’t run without windows” or “linux is a stolen copy of Unix and steals windows drivers”
I don’t mean to be anti-christian but this guy sounds like those guys that stand in the middle of crowded parks with a megaphone and a bible screaming to people and claming that they will burn in hell.
I hope that this guy is not for real and is just a small fragment of someones trolling imagination. because if this guy is real I demand to know where I can contact him to send some friends to kick his vista loving ass, make him some cement shoes and show him the river.

While you are 100% correct about Linux stealing Microsoft’s hard one intellectual property, I would like to take up a matter of semantics. Technically, Linux will have to find a way to work OVER Windows. Thats why it has been so easy for them to STEAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY from MS for so long. Because they HIDE their technology like thieves.
Although I must also lay some blame at Microsofts feet for this one, they have allowed Linux to steal from them for too long. Its time they put their foot down!

Jerry,
Will you please, for the love of gravity, KINDLY stop confusing ‘Linux’ (a Unix-like kernel) with Open Office (free/open office applications similar to Microsoft Office)?
Linux is a kernel, which is coupled with the GNU Operating system to produce a completely free Unix-like operating system. GNU/Linux has several graphical desktop interfaces, some of which (sort of) resemble Windows.
If you use GNU/Linux, and one of the many free graphical desktops, you can run “Open Office”, which is what you keep mentioning as “Linux”. Since the folks who make Open Office write such portable code, it works under Windows, too. So, they maintain versions for many operating systems.
In Summary :
Linux is a kernel (that is widely used)
GNU Is an operating system.
Together .. they make .. GNU/Linux, or GNU+Linux, or (commonly) just “Linux” for short.
Open Office is a suite of programs, not an OS.
All good now?

Wow!
I’m not sure if this is supposed to be some kind of Steven Colbert genre of humor or what. . .
On the off chance that anyone takes any of this little article seriously, let me make a few comments based on what I’ve done, rather than my hot-air opinions.
1] I’m typing now at a computer I built myself, from scratch parts. Mobo, RAM, CPU, case, etc. were all purchased from parts dealers after determining the best bang I could get for my limited bucks. I assembled them on my workbench into a Dual-Core AMD-64 system with 2 GB RAM. [I build and repair computers as a hobby and a small income-producing sideline.]
2] These parts are all brand new. None of them, nor the computer that is the sum of the parts, has ever had any Microsoft product installed on it. I have a few different Linux distros installed in a multi-boot configuration, and none of them –or any other Linux distro– relies _in any way_ on having WinXP on the computer! The Linux kernel is based on Unix-related precedents which predate the existence of the Microsoft corporation, although Linux itself was developed in the early 1990s [years before XP]
3] quote: “Vista is far more powerful than windows XP, and runs twice as fast. It is also much harder to pirate, and this point more than anything else has the Linux crowd in a panic.”
This is 100% upside down. From what I’ve read, many people drop Vista and go back to WinXP because the performance is better! And far from panicking “the Linux crowd” many of the Linux user forums you can find on the net are laughing, and hailing Vista as Microsoft’s last dying gasp at trying to be relevant to modern computing. And as I noted, a Linux OS has got nothing to do with any Microsoft OS. They are incompatible systems, based on different kernels.
4] Quote: “Linux may seem like a good alternative to Office, but all that is happening in linux is that the windows interface is cleverly hidden away. It still needs the drivers and software services in order to run, and in most cases - that happens WITHOUT a valid windows licence.”
Category error: Linux is not an alternative to Office. “Office” is a suite of Microsoft programs designed to run under the Windows operating system.
I think you are confusing Linux –an operating system like WinXP or Vista or OS X– with “Open Office,” an open-source suite of office programs that can be run on Linux machines or Windows machines, depending on which version you download. So please get your categories straight: Linux or Windows runs the computer, and Open Office are programs you can launch to do office-type jobs, instead of buying the horrendously expensive Microsoft Office suite.
5] Quote: “This is just plain piracy.” Not in any way. If you are running a Windows version of Open Office, presumably you own the Windows OS you are using. If you are running a Linux version of Open Office, it’s running on pure Linux with no Microsoft anything.
My computer boots, does 3-D desktop graphics, plays video and audio, runs an HP Printer/scanner just fine with no Microsoft products on it whatsoever. I can go on the internet, or stay on my local home network and operate one computer from the desktop of another, all using Linux only.
6] Quote: “Vista will finally put an end to this blatant abuse of intellectual property, and linux should decline, taking the pirates with it.”
I beg your pardon, the the only thing that is blatant here is your inability to distinguish between an Operating System and a program.
I’m sure you are correct, though, in a way you don’t intend. Vista _will_ put an end to the piracy of the Microsoft OS. It is so inferior to a modern Linux OS that no one would want to steal it when they can get something better for free or at a very low cost.

Vista appears to the uninitiated to be slower. This is in fact an illusion. It is not slower at all but more deliberate and thorough. Vista is like an experienced and wise master craftsman who choses his tools carefully without undignified haste. Carefully he brings the tacit knowledge of centuries to bear, his kindly eyes show no fear, no rancour. He is not driven by greed, he feels no need to debase himself in the crass one-upmanship of the rat race. Nobility shines from his every feature, his mighty hands wield the sword of justice - truly this is a kingly man. And his name is Vista.

this is some funny shit, you’re the best.

In my personal opinion, this guy brings up a good point. Clearly the Linux pirates will not be able to compete with the all-powerful Vista because of all the awesome upgrades. The Linux are Communists.

This is the stuff I’ve been saying since DAY ONE. Everybody knows that Linus Torvalds STOLE the Windows Kernel during his days in Redmond, and tried to make this “Linux operating system”. It is a multi-level marketing scam– To become a “Linux User”, you have to join an “Open Source Consortium”, which is just doublespeak for “Pyramid Scheme”. They tell you you are developing a small bit of code for the “Bigger Picture”, and who’s at the top? Linus… it’s all a huge pyramid scheme and when the FBI finally finds out, the’re DONE

I find the whole concept of stealing from Microsoft very ironic. It was Bill Gates who stole the intellectual property in the first place. Is it really stealing if the “owner” stole it them self?

“Gems from the net guru”

You’re articles are hilarious.
And yes, dead to the Linux pirates!
January 27th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
you have forgotten to say that Steve Jobs has stolen everything from Windows to use it in his operating system.
And he has stolen the UNIX source code from Linux as well. Which is as you know stolen from Microsofts invention DOS.
Did you know that the penguin TUX was a creation of Bill Gates, he has drawn it at the age of 3 when his good friend Linus T. has stolen it?
January 28th, 2008 at 9:56 am
There is a lot of sarcasm here, but I assure you I am being deadly serious. How can you fail to see that Linux really is communist and that Microsoft is doing us a great good by finally adding security features so that Linux can no longer steal Windows services. We don’t need these pirates in our software industry.

I can’t believe what this guy is saying. It is an utter disgrace to the computer world. First off, he can’t spell worth shit. It’s unbelievable. Second, nearly every point he is making (or trying to make) is completely incorrect. Mr. Cooper, Mac OS and Linux don’t run in conjunction (that’s a big word, you understand that?) with any Windows “drivers or services” as you state so often. Mac and Linux run on an entirely free and open-source kernel that is much more secure and more stable than the Windows NT kernel will ever hope to achieve. The Linux and Mac community are growing on average 3 times faster than all of Microsoft (read some articles on the technology market and you will see for yourself). Internet Explorer only has about 65% of the internet market share. The rest of which belongs to the (free, open-source, non-Microsoft) browsers Mozilla Firefox and Apple’s Safari.
You need to do your homework (and learn to spell) before opening your mouth ever again. You are a disgrace to the entire industry Mr. Cooper.
